The Parabola
- Formerly occupied by the Commonwealth Institute, the building is now known as the Parabola
- 3.5 acre landmark site with iconic listed building of 70,000sqft situated on High Street Kensington and adjacent to Holland Park
- Rem Koolaas and Reinier de Graaf of OMA were appointed to create innovative occupational solutions to reinvigorate the local area
- An agreement has now been reached with the Design Museum for a new 100,000 sqft museum in the Exhibition Building
- 3 new high quality residential apartment buildings will complement the adjacent Exhibition Building
- The local community is being consulted at each stage of the project
The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and English Heritage have resolved to grant planning permission and listed building consent for the scheme. These decisions were endorsed by the Mayor of London.
The application includes the refurbishment of and alterations to the Exhibition Building to provide exhibition galleries, with ancillary uses including offices, storage, restaurant / cafe and retail.
The 62 residential units will comprise 9 x one bedroom, 13 x two bedroom, 28 x three bedroom, 11 x four bedroom and 1 x five bedroom units.
The development will create 2 public piazzas complementing a new cultural destination that will contribute to the vitality of Kensington High Street.
The proposals are being developed in consultation with English Heritage and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea to ensure the long term future of the Parabola.
The redevelopment of the site is an important project for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and for London. It will bring back into use one of the capital's most iconic buildings whilst providing high quality family accommodation in landscaped grounds that complement and integrate into Holland Park and the surrounding area.
