The challenge of integrating modern architecture into a world famous historical setting

A joint venture with llchester Estates to redevelop a complex 3.5-acre site housing the listed former Commonwealth Institute. The result has reinvigorated the area with the Design Museum being identified as an ideal occupier of the 100,000 sqft Institute, alongside 54 apartments across three remarkable buildings designed by Rem Koolhaas and Reinier de Graaf, each of which were sold ahead of programme.

The Design Museum

“The Design Museum was approached by Chelsfield in 2008, and presented with the unique opportunity to collaborate on the refurbishment of the building with a view to becoming the occupier. In November 2016, the Design Museum opened to the public following our extensive fit-out works with a vibrant public engagement programme of exhibitions, events, learning activities and our permanent collection.”

Alice Black, Deputy Director of the Design Museum
